When I was training for the London Marathon last year, without a doubt, the main ingredient driving improvement and progression both in my 'self' or improvement as an athlete didn't come from
An advanced, complicated training plan
or
Any gimmicks or fancy tech bits like ice baths or a Whoop band.
It was
just doing a lot of good old fashioned hard work.
Hard is subjective.
This theory is yet another reason why I think physical challenges and resilience are so important.
It helps us recalibrate and establish what 'hard' truly is.
Let me explain.
When you choose a new and really difficult training path, we might struggle, sweat, sweat and whinge...
But what we find is that suddenly, every other ‘hard’ path in our lives feels
familiar.
With this familiarity, those things start to feel easier…
Getting through a long, tough day at work suddenly feels easier than the gruelling lower body session with a metcon finisher.
Listening to your boss’ daily nonsense…
Suddenly seems easier because you were nearly sick running fast intervals the day before.
THIS is why training promotes resilience in us.
It forces us to do hard things on a regular basis.
And in turn, rewards us with
fitness and strength.
