I promise that the carrot reference in the subject line will soon become
relevant.
First, let's have a quick quiz.
If you were to gain a pound of muscle (~400g) how many extra calories per day would you burn?
Is the answer...
A) 100
B) 6
C) 220
D) 400
The answer is B. 5.9 calories per pound to be exact, according to a 2001 study.
FYI, fat burns just 2 calories per pound.
This flies in the face of one of the biggest myths in health and fitness that gaining muscle burns a TON of calories, meaning that at rest you burn lots of extra calories and you can keep fat gain at bay more easily.
This tells us that whilst gaining muscle does burn 3 times more calories than gaining fat, the degree to which it does is not significant.
So, even if you have an AMAZING muscle gaining phase and gain an extra 5lbs of muscle, you'd only burn an extra ~30 calories... the calorie content of a carrot.
This is just yet another piece of information that confirms to us why making sure our diet (specifically calorie balance) is nailed down, is key.
Much love,
JB
